How to Date Successfully

When it comes to dating, there are a number of factors that come into play when deciding whether or not a follow up date with a given person is that right choice. The date, itself, is, of course, the biggest factor, but even visitation after the date plays a part, and that can be either more controlled, less controlled, or a mixture of the two. If the “after party” of a given date takes place at your own place, you have a great deal of control over the proceedings, and that can be either a huge advantage, or a disaster just waiting to happen. I don’t know the odds that the ball will be in your court, but let’s assume that it’s 50/50 and prepare accordingly. Here are some tips to help make your home conducive to the after party of your future eHarmony dates.

First and foremost, cleaning is of the utmost importance. You don’t want to bring a date to your home only to find a cluttered mess, and I don’t have to tell you that loose garbage is an absolute no no. Therefore, you’re going to want to make sure, at the very least, that you tidy up before meeting your date at the restaurant of your choosing. If you’re living with a roommate, both of you need to be held accountable for each other’s social needs, and so working together to keep the apartment relatively clean is a must.

The next, and perhaps most important thing aside from having a clean atmosphere, is to have a relaxing and pleasant environment. This can mean a lot of different things to different people, but there are a few near universal basics we can ensure your place has. For starters, you’re going to need excess seating. You’ll need more than the two or three chairs to accommodate you and your roommates at the dinner table, for example. Be sure to have about double the seating you would need on a normal day, so if you and your roommates all have dates on the same night, everyone has a seat. Another important factor in the atmosphere of your living space is decor, and so you’ll want decor that is inoffensive, and you may even want the occasional provocative piece of decor as a conversation starter. Either way, you’ll want to drop some coin on some new decor to really make the most of your space.

Lastly, you’ll want to mind your manners. This may sound silly, but rest assured, all of my life experience has taught me that we humans are notorious for not being able to get along, and that starts with a lack of empathy. Be sure to read your date’s emotions with keen observation and take the old adage, “treat others the way you’d like to be treated” to heart. Your date is most likely just as nervous as you are, so take every opportunity to make them feel at ease, but you should also be ready to back off if your actions are having the opposite effect.
